Watch: Man’s cellphone snatched in Struben’s Valley

With the nationwide lockdown continuing, opportunistic crimes are on the rise.

A video was shared on social media yesterday, 4 June, of a man’s cellphone being snatched from his hand while he was taking a call outside on the pavement.

The video shows the would-be thieves arriving in a white vehicle, which the driver parks across the road from their unsuspecting victim.

After a few minutes, one of them gets out and pretends to be on a call, all while keeping an eye on the victim. As the driver leaves the parking spot and moves closer to the victim, the other thug snatched the victim’s cellphone from behind, and jumps into the car.

With the nationwide lockdown continuing, opportunistic crimes are on the rise. Community members are encouraged to be vigilant when outside to jog, walk, cycle and do shopping, and to keep their cellphones out of sight.

Police gave the following tips for cellphone users:

  • Enable auto-lock
  • Have a mobile tracking app installed
  • Lock sensitive applications
  • Back up your smartphone data

Should one fall victim to cellphone theft, erase all personal data remotely.
