The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) has issued a stern warning to motorists driving under the influence of alcohol that roadblocks will soon be resumed.
The JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the roadblocks will soon commence due to an increase in accidents involving motorists and pedestrians under the influence of alcohol.
“During the month of June, the number of accidents increased dramatically, and alcohol was a contributing factor,” Minnaar suggested.
The drastic spike in Covid-19 cases in the country prompted the government to temporarily ban the sale of alcohol in a bid to flatten the curve.
However, law-enforcement agencies in Johannesburg still encounter incidents of drinking and driving, despite the ban on alcohol sales.
Minnaar also went on to issue a stern warning against the use of home-brewed drinks such as pineapple beer, or drinks made from sanitizer that contains alcohol.
“Motorists will get arrested, their blood samples will be drawn and they will be detained at police stations,” he warned firmly.
