Thieves abandon live bomb in failed cash in transit heist

Several weeks ago, thieves accidentally set fire to the cash they intended to steal and again this week, explosives proved problematic for the suspects.

Would-be criminals again struck out as they left the scene of an attempted robbery empty-handed. Exact details of the incident are unknown but a cash in transit (CIT) vehicle was seemingly the target of a heist on Helpmekaar Road on Monday, 27 July.

Several weeks ago, thieves accidentally set fire to the cash they intended to steal and again this week, explosives proved problematic for the suspects. Reports indicate that the men attempting to rob the CIT vehicle fled when the bomb they had planned to use failed to detonate.

Police have yet to confirm the details but Florida Community Policing Forum chairperson, Prashan Sukhu, shared the information he had at hand, saying, “No cash was taken and they fled to Meadowlands”.

The number of suspects is unknown but they are said to have escaped on foot, leaving behind their BMW at the scene. The bomb squad was requested to assist with the live explosives and no injuries were reported. Information from the authorities is still pending and should it be forthcoming, it will be shared accordingly.

If any member of the public has any information pertaining to the incident they are asked to please contact their nearest police station.
