The criminal underworld survives on the interconnection of suppliers, runners, and high-level distributors. In a suburb ravaged by illegal mining, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) secured the arrest of a man in possession of explosives on Tuesday, 15 September.
The community’s role in assisting authorities can not be understated as it was one such tip-off that alerted JMPD to the possible criminal behaviour. Following up on the information gathered, JMPD’s Undercover Unit engaged a man they believed to be in possession of explosives. He was found to be in possession of ten blasting cartridges, three detonating cords and eight ComEx electrical fuses.
“These explosives get used for crime such as ATM bombing, cash-in-transit robbery and for illegal mining,” stated JMPD spokesperson, Superintendent Wayne Minnaar. The male suspect, believed to be in his thirties was arrested and will appear in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.
