Shebeen queen arrested for selling liquor illegally

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan said they confiscated liquor to the value of R1 580.

An illegal shebeen that has been operating for over a decade in Cosmo City was closed down and its owner arrested by local police.

Following an operation in the area, a 50-year-old woman, who has been running this illegal outlet for 14 years, was arrested for trading illegally.

Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan said they confiscated liquor to the value of R1 580.

During a media briefing about law enforcement under Level 1 on Tuesday, 22 September, Minister of Police Bheki Cele condemned places that have been allowed to sell liquor under lockdown Level flouting the regulations, including selling alcohol illegally.

He said taverns and restaurants were found to be breaking the rules by allowing customers to order takeaways and also trade after the designated time or curfew. He said owners shut their doors to hide the fact that business was continuing as usual, an act he deemed selfish as it puts everyone at risk.
