Fidelity ADT community development manager Nicholas Govender has cautioned cyclists to remain extra vigilant in light of the increase in bike-jackings.
This after their reaction officers assisted in recovering bicycles that had been robbed from two cyclists in the Honeydew area on 10 October.
According to this massive security group, a Fidelity ADT reaction officer was patrolling along Beyers Naudé Drive on the corner of CR Swart Drive in Sundowner at around 6.30am after a shift change when he was flagged down urgently by two cyclists who had just been robbed of their bicycles. The officer immediately set off in pursuit of the suspects and managed to apprehend both. One of them resisted and tried to disarm the officer. During the struggle for the firearm, several shots were fired, leaving the suspect fatally wounded.
The second suspect was apprehended and handed over to Honeydew Police, and the firearm was also taken for ballistics. Spokesperson for the station, Captain Balan Muthan confirmed the case.
The two bicycles were recovered and returned to the cyclists.
Govender applauded the officer for his prompt response. “This incident highlights how important it is to ensure a quick response, and I commend the officer for his professionalism and competence,” he said.
He concluded by further warning cyclists to be careful of more attacks as bicycle-jacking has become big business.
