Man dies after encounter with armed house robbers

"The victims were tied up with shoelaces before the men left."

Flashing lights, blocked-off streets and the sight of emergency vehicles had residents fearing the worst, 3 November.

Shortly after sundown, a home on Sonderend Street was the scene of another senseless tragedy when the occupants of the house were robbed and one man sustained a fatal gunshot wound. Four armed men entered the house where they assaulted the occupants and ransacked two safes, making off with jewellery, an automobile and a firearm with ammunition.

“The victims were tied up with shoelaces before the men left. After roughly 10 minutes and believing it to be safe, the complainants freed themselves, only to discover their domestic worker with a bloody head wound. After further inspection of their home, they found that the domestic worker’s boyfriend had been shot,” confirmed police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan.

Paramedic were called and they assessed the badly wounded man, but sadly he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. It is unknown how the men gained access to the house, but police are urging the community to remain alert in the build-up to the end of 2020. “The community needs to be extremely observant, wary and keep your doors locked,” urged Captain Muthan.

The suspects are still at large and police encourage anyone with any information to contact Roodepoort Police immediately. Captain Muthan attempted to reassure the public, saying “We are increasing our efforts after this tragic incident. We are taking every necessary precaution by increasing visibility and patrolling throughout the area.”
