Today Wyda solutions are used in over 15 countries supporting millions of customers. Founded on January 1, 1992 Wyda Embalagens’ headoffice is based in Sorocaba, south of the country’s capital Sao Paulo. Its local subsidiaries and production facilities are Rio Prata, located in Mato Grosso do Sul, in the city of Tres Lagoas; Alukenti, located in Pernanbuco, in the city of Sao Lourenço da Mat; and Okra, specialized in flexible packaging, located near Sao Paulo, in the city of Sorocaba. As the largest in its field in South America today, Wyda Brazil decided to expand into other, compatible markets in 2016 and on March 20, Wyda Packaging South Africa was established in Johannesburg as the first foreign subsidiary outside Brazil. Wyda SA focuses on the production of disposable aluminium foil containers, trays and dishes for the food producing and catering industry. Additionally, Wyda Brazil produces various PVC products from cling-wrap to household gloves. Wyda’s key advantage both in Brazil and South Africa lies in the strategic procurement of raw materials, product agility, sales schedules and accurate logistics. To further improve these qualities Wyda South Africa has recently moved to a XXX sqm complex to house offices, production and warehousing all under one roof in Spartan, Kempton Park. Later this year, Wyda Brazil will complete construction of the 20 000m2 distribution center in Alameda Wyda in Sorocaba to cater for the company’s growth, high demand for aluminium foil products and most importantly meet the need for more physical space.
Wyda SA Profile

The Wyda Mission
… is to provide products and services that make life easier for consumers with convenience, quality and sustainability, ensuring the satisfaction of our customers, employees and suppliers. Being recognized as the best company in the disposable packaging segment. Says Carlos Schütte, managing partner of Wyda SA: “When we started our venture in South Africa, together with our Brazilian partners, we set out to producing packaging that preserves the quality of its intended content. “While all our products are locally manufactured, we can rely on our partners in Brazil and their many years of experience and in-depth expertise when it comes to production, range and new products to be introduced. “We apply stringent quality measures during procurement of raw material and during the production process at our manufacturing plant in Johannesburg to ensure that the high Wyda standards are met.” Wyda Brazil is ISO 9001 certified, Wyda South Africa has B-BBEE Level 4 and the ISO 22000 is in process. Originally Wyda SA was operating from a production and warehouse facility in Germiston. In March last year the company relocated to larger facilities in Spartan, Kempton Park. The move catered for further expansion plans, optimise production and improve logistics. Says Schütte: “We are solutions-oriented and committed to delivering top quality aluminium foil products and services to the Southern and Western African food, baking and catering industries. We deliver anywhere and in greater Johannesburg even for free.” The Wyda product range has been expanding continuously and today includes aluminium foil containers in various shapes and sizes – baking, roasting and pie dishes – as well as aluminium foil in light and heavy-duty quality. Wyda’s customers include packaging wholesalers and retailers and distributors, large industrial companies with huge daily canteen requirements, supermarkets, the hospitality industry, including catering companies and restaurants as well as take-away shops and other end-users. “While we have minimum quantity requirements, we offer competitive prices, so even smaller companies like to stock up on products,” says Schütte. “In fact, we actually look at each customer individually and quote on their specific requirements, in order to offer the best possible price. Our current minimum order is one box of 250 units, in combo or plain.”
Disposable and recyclable
Wyda South Africa is committed to recycling 100%: The practice of collection, recycling and recovery of a product’s packaging after use returns valuable materials and energy to be used again. Recycling the recovered aluminium effectively reduces the world’s dependence on natural resources and ensures that they are used efficiently and effectively. Says Schütte: “At Wyda South Africa we are excited about new technologies to manufacture aluminium in a more environmentally friendly way and observe these trends with great interest.”
Facts about aluminium
Looking at recycling and environmental factors of aluminium packaging, there are several important facts to be considered. Here is a list of the most of important ones: Aluminium is economical, safe and ecologically sensible:
- Aluminium is the most commonly used metal after steel
- Aluminium is the most abundant metal in the earth’s crust.
- Aluminium is the third most abundant chemical element on earth after oxygen and silicon.
Hygienic: The smooth surface is easy to clean and odourless. Aluminium is therefore ideal for use under sterile and germ-free conditions – areas with high hygienic requirements such as laboratories, hospitals or food processing. Fully recyclable: The extraction of aluminium is energy intensive, but old aluminium can be easily melted and reused 100%. Only 5% of the energy is consumed! Lightweight and very stable: The density of aluminium is about 2.6 to 2.8 g per cm 3. This is about 1/3 of the density of steel, which is why aluminium is also called “light metal”. Despite its low weight aluminium has a very high strength. Vapor-impermeable: Even with an extremely long shelf life, moisture cannot diffuse through the metal. Impact-resistant and high strength: The surface of an aluminium plate is dented by impact, but the impact energy is absorbed by the deformation. This property is important for almost all WYDA products. It makes them durable and extremely durable even under unfavourable conditions. Insensitive to temperature fluctuations: The material properties remain constant in the temperature range from -80 to +150 ° C. Even extreme temperatures tolerate aluminium without losing its properties. In extreme cold, aluminium becomes even harder and its hardness increases! Resistant to UV radiation: Long durability and extreme UV radiation have no effect on this material. Corrosion-resistant and protects itself: When exposed to oxygen from the air, the aluminium surface is coated with a dense oxide layer, which, if damaged, is immediately renewed and the underlying metal is protected against corrosion. Magnetically neutral: Aluminium is free from ferromagnetism. For certain applications, e.g. in laboratories, this material property can be of great importance. “We see exciting opportunities in South Africa for economical, environmentally sustainable packaging solutions at competitive prices. Together with our Brazilian partners as well as our local customers we will be adding more innovative products to our range in South Africa this year and look forward to expanding our distribution into other parts of Africa as well in the medium-term,” says Schütte.
