Large bustling crowds leave criminals licking their lips at the volume of potential marks. With the festive season in full swing, Management of Westgate Super Regional Mall have issued safety tips to avoid becoming a victim this December.
Westgate’s Shopping Centre Crime Risk Initiative is a two-fold warning that focuses on both festive season safety tips and cash risk management.
FESTIVE SEASON SAFETY TIPS:
• Be aware of your surroundings. Report any suspicious behaviour or activity to the centre guards or the police on site
• Do not leave your handbags or valuables unattended
• All valuables in your vehicle should be safely put away in the boot or under seats in order to avoid smash-and-grab incidents
• Vehicle jamming devices are frequently used by criminals, so ensure that your vehicle is locked by physically checking it before leaving
• In the case where you suspect that you are being followed, drive to the nearest police station, or alert centre security or management
• Don’t trust people who offer you products at prices lower that the official retailer’s
CASH RISK MANAGEMENT:
• Avoid withdrawing large sums of money
• Do not accept assistance from strangers at ATMs
• Protect your PIN number
• Never let your card out of your sight when making purchases
• Refrain from forcing your bank card into the ATM slot if there seems to be an obstruction
• Report any irregularities observed at an ATM, and avoid using such machines
• Be advised to register for any notifications service with your bank in order to know what is happening with your account
