End goals are often shared by many, but what sets us apart is the unique path taken to that summit. As matrics wait patiently for the moment they collectively receive their results, each can sit individually and reflect on how those marks were achieved.
The 2020 matric year began like all before, filled with excitement and anticipation. However, only three months in, expectations were shattered by the era-defining coronavirus. Some had an eye on personal improvement while others were preparing for the final academic push that could define their university ambitions.
West Ridge High School learner, Thabang Shaun Bles, strives to see the positives in life, despite personal hardship. “My goals in 2020 were to build myself as an individual because I believe that you can conquer all with a positive mentality. This pandemic brought challenges but I was still able to overcome my struggle, knowing even through the heaviest storm there is always a rainbow at the end of it,” said Thabang.
The state-imposed lockdown led to Thabang’s mother losing her job, causing immense strain on their household. He would move several times to alleviate the financial strain but despite the turmoil, he would persevere. “I did not let this take my focus off school. This simply shows that every difficult situation has a positive outcome and that you should not give up because something great is waiting for you.”
Greatness Ikechukwu, also from West Ridge High, and Nthuthuko Zuma from Höerskool Die Burger, both had aspirations of dominating academically. Greatness aimed to be recognised at the national awards dinner, while Nthuthuko, 2020 Class President, looked forward to making unforgettable memories to go with her possible distinctions.
Each would share differing experiences, as Greatness said, “It hasn’t really had much of an effect as God has really been preserving us”. Meanwhile, Nthuthuko found a new level of introspection, recounting, “The day to day experience changed drastically as the pandemic rearranged life. It changed the way I view life and people.”
Completing matric was still the ultimate hurdle and the trio are all confident as they await official confirmation. They all plan to study in 2021, each with their own unique inspiration. Whether self improvement, a dedication to the Lord or realisation of economic prosperity, completing matric is the platform to launch to the stars.

“I believe that happiness is something you should have when succeeding further in life because you cannot accomplish anything with a bitter spirit, so happiness is a key aspect into unlocking greatness upon your life.”

Ntuthuko Zuma
“For 2021, the pandemic had put some sort of barrier onto my goals; it has lifted the bar higher. The pandemic has made working harder than usual a norm, which I hope to hold on for future reference.”

Greatness Ikechukwu
“I plan to study medicine at Wits and hope to make the first team in Wits for football, and to rank first in first year medicine at Wits. Pretty determined, l know.”
