Discovery Primary Full Service School recently played host to a coding and robotics league, bringing together young minds from six schools across the West Rand.

Organised by Resolute Education, the competition offered learners across various grade levels an engaging platform to demonstrate their technical talent and ingenuity as they collaborated to crack codes, complete challenges and put their creativity to the test.

Participating schools were Discovery Primary Full Service School (Emerald Engineers and Novi Ninjas), Windmill Park Secondary School (Electric Spark), St John The Baptist Catholic School, Netstar Digital Learning Centre – Hillbrow, Altron – Maharishi Digital Hub, and Curro Krugersdorp.

According to Leah Wamulume from Resolute Education, they started the league two years ago, and it has grown immensely within the West Rand.

“This is for learners to come together and test what they have learned in the classrooms,” she said.

Before the league began, the learners in their respective categories (novice and apprentice) were briefed and given their mission to solve for the day. They faced two rounds of challenges before judging.

Young coders put their skills to the test

By the end of the league, learners had put their coding, robotics and problem-solving skills to the test, with St John’s Team 1 taking first place in the Apprentice Stream, followed by St John’s Team 2 in second place and Electric Spark in third.

Altron – Maharishi Digital Hub also received a special mention for representing the SPIKE category, winning the category by default as the sole entrant.

In the Novice Category, St John’s Coders claimed first place, while Discovery Primary School’s Emerald Engineers secured second place and the Novi Ninjas finished in third.
