Local top achiever talks plans after matric

Besides academic excellence, Tumelo is an avid chess and basketball player.

Struben’s Valley’s matric top achiever Tumelo Mogano has his sights set on a career in aeronautical engineering after completing his matric with flying colours.

The St John’s College top learner, who attained six distinctions, including in Mathematics and Physical Science with an average of 83,7 per cent, awaits approval from universities to study the course of his dreams which revolves around the development of an aircraft.

“I’ve always been fascinated with flight and I am looking to build a career in rocket science,” the local teen said.

Tumelo attended St John’s as a Centenary Scholar ( a scholarship awarded to black South African boys who are academically able but lack the means to attend the school), an amazing opportunity and learning experience he’ll always be grateful for. “It’s the teachers who make St John’s great. They are really supportive. It’s lovely to be in an environment like that,” he reflected on his time as a learner at the school.

Besides academic excellence, Tumelo is an avid chess and basketball player. He was chess captain at St John’s and head of Hill House.

Now that matric’s behind him, Tumelo looks to the future with a sense of excitement. “School was the transition stage of my life. Now that it’s over, I get to shape the adult I want to be,” he smiled.
