WATCH: Exciting news on the library front

CoJ has announced that public libraries are finally open again, but not only that, March is fine-free month so this is the perfect opportunity to return your overdue books – no questions asked.

City of Johannesburg Library and Information Services Management have happily shared some long-awaited news: libraries reopened from Monday, 8 March.

It has been nearly a year since full access to CoJ public libraries has been permitted. Residents will still not be able to use all library services, but they are allowed to do more than they have in a long time.

As part of SA Library Week and to celebrate the reopening of the libraries, the entire month of March will also be a fine-free period. Library users are urged to return all their overdue books with no fines to be paid, no questions asked. Joburg Libraries has also said that upon the return of your long overdue books, you can request to have your library membership reinstated.

Under strict social-distancing protocols, all the public libraries will be open between 9am and 4pm from Monday to Friday for the following purposes:
• Borrowing and returning library books
• Studying
• For reference services through telephone enquiries
• Accessing Wi-fi

Unfortunately, the use of in-house library books, the library computers, and photocopy services are still not permitted, and only will be when the challenges that Joburg Libraries has identified relating to Covid-19 are resolved, and the risk of infection is reduced.

Joburg Libraries would also like to make residents aware that libraries may be closed on short notice if problems relating to Covid-19 arise, or if the water supply problems currently affecting the city affect the areas where the libraries are based.

Here are a few of the public libraries in Roodepoort:
• Florida Library on the corner of Church Street and Third Avenue
• Roodepoort Library on the corner of Berlandina and Hodgson Streets
• Witpoortjie Library on Payne Street
• Cosmo City Library on the corner of South Africa Drive and Ext 2 Angola Avenue
• Horizon View Library at Horizon View Shopping Centre
