Vogelstruisfontein — It is common knowledge that school uniforms are often exorbitantly priced, and while there has always been a large number of parents who cannot afford these costs, the financial ramifications of 2020 made that group even bigger.

Hoping to give a few families some peace of mind, EnviroServ Waste Management visited Fleurhof Primary School on Friday, 5 March and gifted 20 lucky learners brand-new school uniforms. The EnviroServ Dress a Learner initiative has been running since 2014, and in that time, the company has provided school uniforms for close to 3 000 learners from throughout South Africa, and they hope to grow that number even more this year.

Located in Vogelstruisfontein on the outskirts of Florida, Fleurhof Primary is a no-fee school which works to give learners from less-privileged backgrounds the same education opportunities as the children who go to regular schools. The school was asked to identify the learners who needed this donation the most, including those from child-headed homes, homes with unemployed parents, and learners who were raised by their grandparents. Six female learners and 14 male learners excitedly accepted their full school uniform, including a shirt, skirt or trousers, a pair of shoes, a jersey, a tie and a tracksuit.

“The government has made a call to corporate South Africa to assist in initiatives that will accelerate nation-building, and EnviroServ is pleased to be able to partner with various government departments to make SA a better country and improve the lives of these young learners,” said Makgabo van Niekerk, the company’s Public Affairs Manager.

This generous donation likely took a huge amount of strain off desperate families, the evidence of which was seen by the many smiling faces on the day of EnviroServ’s visit.
