Mrs SA finalist has dreams to inspire

A Mrs South Africa semi-finalist, Tasneem Smith Roberts, fully believes that pageants are an opportunity not only to find yourself, but also to help your community and country.

Beauty pageants have often been a controversial point of conversation. Many people are under the impression that these pageants are just for beautiful girls caked in make-up, to show off their modelling skills, but they are a lot more than that.

A Mrs South Africa semi-finalist, Tasneem Smith Roberts, fully believes that pageants are an opportunity not only to find yourself, but also to help your community and country. “Pageants have evolved. With a platform like Mrs South Africa it is not just about beauty. It is more about what you have to offer your country and your community. You have an opportunity to share your views, ambitions and hopes for a better South Africa, and work towards these goals,” she said.

She believes the Mrs SA pageant is the perfect place to re-discover yourself and pursue your passions. Tasneem is a 27-year-old mother of two living in Witpoortjie, and before this year, she had never thought of joining the pageant world. By day, she is a foundation-phase teacher at Westbury Primary School, and by night, she is a wife and loving mother – a beautiful example of the empowered women the Mrs SA pageant celebrates.

Growing up, she had always wanted to be a nurse, but six years ago she began teaching and her passion for the profession bloomed. “I remember being in primary school very clearly. I had an amazing Grade 1 teacher and I believe her support helped me become the ambitious person I am today. So I want to be that support system to the little children I teach on a daily basis,” Tasneem continued.

Tasneem’s platform is heavily based around being a positive role model and showing all men and women, young and old, that by believing in themselves and going after what they believe in, they will be able to overcome anything.

Despite never having pursued modelling before, Tasneem found out she was a semi-finalist in her first-ever pageant on 5 March. She has done well in the Mrs SA pageant so far, but there is still work to be done before the top 25 are chosen in June. The budding pageant queen is in urgent need of sponsors and is asking any company or community member that may be able to assist to please step forward. Without the sponsors she will be unable to go further in the competition. “There are benefits that sponsors can receive, so I would love to bring someone on board and introduce them to the world of Mrs South Africa,” she concluded.
