The Federation of Dance Drill, Cheerleading and Drum Majorette Sport of South Africa (FDDCMSA) hosted their first live competition of the year at Heritage Lodge in Krugersdorp, 10 April. Roodepoort representatives Drummie Nation Drum Majorettes and Roodebeeck Majorettes dominated proceedings, swamping the podium at almost every given opportunity.
Trezona Park-based drummie club, Drummie Nation, brought a small but talented team of young synchronised aces. The fledgling club pulls talent from schools around Roodepoort, and they can be proud of their two first-placed finishes in the High Mini Formations Mace Group and High Mini Formation Non Prop categories. The team also picked up second place in the High Mini Formation Flag Group category.

Amelia Nelson has been drilling the girls since late 2020 and will feel confident going into future competitions. “As coach I am extremely proud of the girls and their achievements. Their unwavering determination and hard work have paid off and I can only see the team going from strength to strength in the future,” beamed Amelia.

Not to be outdone, the drummie talent conveyor belt of Roodebeeck Majorettes refused to be defeated. With a mammoth 65 members led by five coaches, including head coach Sonja Nortman, the Roodebeeck Primary School-based team amassed an impressive 15 medals which included 10 gold in the Primary Mini Formation Non Prop, Primary Mini Formation Flag, and Senior Mace Solo categories, to name just a fraction.
Roodebeeck returned to their maces and flags in February and have been putting in seven to 12 hours a week of training time since then. “We are very excited to be moving on with competitions, and our next one is scheduled for the end of May,” said Sonja, who is also FDDCMSA chairperson.

Sonja promised more hard work and an increased category list as they prepare for more competitions, most notably the national and international championships scheduled for September and October, respectively.
