The police along with other law-enforcement agencies on the West Rand recorded more than 120 arrests from 23 April to 24 April 2021. The arrests were for various crimes, ranging from suspected and attempted murder, possession of an unlicensed firearm, rape, as well as contravening the Disaster Management Act regulations.
West Rand District Police communications officer, Sergeant Carmen Hendricks said, “We want to remind the community to comply with the Disaster Management Act regulations as it is in everyone’s best interest, and to participate in the fight against crime”.
Commissioner Major General Fred Kekana welcomed the successes of the weekend operations and praised the police and other law-enforcement agencies that went above and beyond the call of duty to ensure the safety of the communities. The arrested suspects are expected to appear in different magistrates’ courts soon.
The police are also urging residents always to wear a mask when they are out in public as failure to do so counts as a contravention of the Disaster Management Act regulations and could result in arrest.
