The driveway is often the most common point of entry for armed robbers, and recent crime reports indicate that all residential contact crimes begin at the driveway gate.
Local security company, Beagle Watch Armed Response reported that over the past 48 hours, they have seen a marked increase in opportunistic crimes in all areas of their footprint. Armed driveway robberies in particular have increased sharply.

“While we at Beagle Watch are doing everything we can to ensure your safety and that of the communities we serve, I would like to urge you not to become complacent regarding your personal and home security,” cautioned André Aiton, Beagle Watch Managing Director.
The Northsider spoke to Honeydew Police spokesperson, Captain Balan Muthan who also cautioned the community and indicated that armed driveway robberies were a problem indeed.

“Members of the community driving to their homes should refrain from always using the same route. When they get to their homes they must make sure that there is someone waiting for them or they should call their security company.
“Wherever you are driving from or to, you need to be observant at all times,” said Captain Muthan.
Tips for when entering or exiting your driveway:
• When arriving at home or when visiting friends or family, be aware of your surroundings
• Look around you before you drive in
• Drive in and wait for the gate to close, making sure that no one has followed you inside
• Have a plan of action in case of an emergency and have a panic button ready
• Keep your security company 24-hour Call Centre number on speed dial
