Zandspruit mob attack accused make first appearance in court

The bail application hearing was set for 9 June when some of the accused are to apply for bail based on consultations with their attorney.

On Monday, 24 May five men and one woman charged with murder, attempted murder and kidnapping appeared briefly in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.

The accused were arrested for their alleged involvement in a mob attack on nine young men at a sports field in Zandspruit on Wednesday, 19 May.

The bail application hearing was set for 9 June when some of the accused are to apply for bail based on consultations with their attorney.

All six suspects will remain in custody while they await the bail hearing.

The violent attack by a vigilante group in Zandspruit resulted in six people reported deceased while the other three remained critical in hospital.

On Friday, 21 May some family members confirmed at Honeydew Police Station that two more of the victims had died in hospital, bringing the total number the deceased victims to eight.
