Whether you are expanding your knowledge or disappearing into a fictional world, the words on the pages of a book have the power to both educate and empower. Even though the digital age is making the world of print increasingly less popular, the timeless reliability of a book is second to none.
Branch librarian for the Davidsonville Library, Beaula Jones, describes books as her passion, having spent her entire professional career in the library field. Before being promoted to branch manager in Davidsonville, Beaula worked at the Florida Library for 12 years, and at the Witpoortjie Library for three. These public libraries, like all those in the City of Johannesburg, are freely available to community members for studying, researching, or even the next book to let your imagination run wild.
According to Beaula, the Davidsonville Library has over 10 000 books on hand, yet despite the intriguing selection, it is not widely used by the community. This is something the life-long book enthusiast is hoping to change. Beaula is encouraging children, students, and adults alike to make use of the library’s facilities. The library (and its staff) are available for homework assistance and assisting with reference work and assignments, as well as their online story-time sessions for toddlers. “Learners are more than welcome to come to the library for help with their assignments. They must just know, we do not do their homework for them. We help them learn how to do it themselves. We show them how to use the encyclopaedias, where to look in which book for what information – so they know these skills for when they go to university,” said Beaula.
The library follows Covid-19 protocols at all times, so they limit the number of people allowed inside at a specific time, but they have rules to make sure that, even by following the protection guidelines, anyone who needs to can make use of the library. You may study inside the library, but if you would like to stay and read a book, there is an allocated area outside for leisure reading. There is also free WiFi for studying and work purposes.
“I want to encourage the younger community members especially to use the library. They can’t rely solely on their educators, they need to learn the skills to educate themselves as well. This is my community and my passion. I will help the community members wherever I can,” Beaula concluded.
To become a member of the Davidsonville Library (or any City of Johannesburg Library) and have access to any of their books, sign up for free at cojlibrary.overdrive.com, bring your membership number to the library, and you will be given a membership card. The library is open from Monday to Friday from 9am to 4pm for studying, and returning or borrowing books.
Did you know, you can return your borrowed books to any of the CoJ Libraries? So if you checked out a book at the Witpoortjie Library, but you are closer to Davidsonville, you can return your library book to the Davidsonville Library because all the libraries run by CoJ work on the same system.
