All Sterlig Retirement Village residents safe after fire
No injuries but three people treated for mild smoke inhalation.
As the winter chills bite, the rush for adequate heat becomes a primary necessity.
Cranking up the heat too much can have negative consequences as igniting fires become more possible. A fire broke out at Sterlig Retirement Village on the evening of 1 June, that thankfully ended without tears. Community members reacted quickly, containing the fire and preventing any severe damage, leaving fire crews to mop up.
Chris Montgomery of Emergency Control South Africa, who were among the first on scene, relayed, “We treated three people for slight smoke inhalation as a precaution, but no residents were transported to hospital”. City of Johannesburg Emergency Medical Services (COJEMS) spokesperson, Robert Mulaudzi, confirmed, “We received the call around 6pm and one fire engine responded to the incident. No injuries were reported and the cause is currently unknown.”
Fire safety is paramount in these cold months, and Mulaudzi reminds everyone to please be cautious when using heating devices. “During winter season, COJEMS respond to a number of fire incidents which are mostly caused by heating devices,” he said. “Please be cautious when using any heaters, paraffin lamps, gas and candles. Never go to sleep with these still on.”
