Books and music were the order of the afternoon for parents and children at the Story time In the Park session at the Wilgeheuwel Extreme Park on 30 May. The second offering saw a bigger group of parents and children, and more music, singing and of course, books.
Geraldine Anderson, one of the organisers said the first event was the introduction to reading and this time, they added a theme for the session. “We are going to try to do different themes every time. Today we read stories from around the world. We started in Australia, the Philippines and then Africa,” she explained.
Musician, Zoe Makola kicked off the session with a song and even had Lauré Kirsten-Otto on drums. The first story was set in Australia and incorporated the Aboriginal Didgeridoo instrument, to the excitement of the kids. Ashleigh Morrison-Young was another addition to the story-time sessions, as she recited a poem for the young ones. Geraldine said incorporating Ashleigh into the stories was a great way for the children to have a role model they can relate to.
Itumeleng Moropa, who brought her daughter said the stories were quite nice and a great tradition to get children outside. “This is a great way to get them out in the fresh air and away from electronics.”
