Manhunt for 20 business robbers

The intruders were allegedly dressed in uniforms similar to what the store employees were wearing and overpowered the security guard.

Muldersdrift Police have launched a manhunt for more than 20 armed robbers in connection with a business robbery in Rietfontein on June 12. According to reports they raided a depot and loaded numerous items into four trucks.

Corporate communications officer in the West Rand District Police, Sergeant Gloria Maswanganye said one shot was fired but no one was injured “The robbers went into the warehouse and overpowered the security personnel. They used forklifts to load different items onto trucks, and fled the scene in different directions.”

The intruders were allegedly dressed in uniforms similar to what the store employees were wearing. The police are appealing to community members to come forward with any information regarding the incident. “We also urge members not to approach the suspects as they are deemed to be heavily armed. Report them to the police instead,” Maswanganye warned.

She suggested the following preventative measures to lower the risk of a robbery at an establishment:

• Stay alert

Be aware of what is happening inside and around your business at all times. Train your staff so that they are informed.

• Ensure visibility

Make sure your business is well-lit on the inside and outside

• Don’t keep large amounts of cash in the cash register

• Install security devices

• Use deterrent signage

• Install physical security measures

• Be an active member of your community

• Hire trustworthy security personnel
