Cosmo Mall closes as a precaution

Several shopping centres in Cosmo City have also closed their doors as uncertainty surrounding protests and looting grows.

Cosmo Mall in Cosmo City remained closed on Monday, July 12, as a precaution to prevent vandalism while protest action and unrest swept across the Gauteng province. Cosmo Mall management confirmed that the shopping mall would remain closed the entire day, and were assessing the situation to determine whether or not they would open their doors.

“It’s not just the mall. Cosmo City Shopping Centre is also closed. We are watching what is happening around the province. Right now it is about ensuring the safety of the people and not putting community members at risk.”

Protests began in KwaZulu-Natal after former president Jacob Zuma handed himself over to authorities to begin a 15-month prison term for contempt of court. The protests and riots quickly turned violent this past weekend and moved to Gauteng where several stores reportedly had been looted and infrastructure torched.
