More than 150 people were arrested in the West Rand District over the weekend from Friday, July 9 to Sunday, July 11. Muldersdrift Police Communications officer, Sergeant Mulalo Ndou said their members dealt with liquor-related crimes to minimise accidents and culpable homicide. “Our mandate is to prevent, combat and investigate crime, and maintain law and order. We intensified operations in order to address violent crimes.”
A total of 155 suspects were arrested for crimes including murder, armed robbery, domestic violence, possession of a hijacked vehicle, child abuse and drug possession, among others. “Others were arrested for various crimes such as assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, shoplifting, possession of a dangerous weapon, drinking in public, and malicious damage to property,” Ndou said.
District Police Commissioner, Major General Fred Kekana welcomed the arrests and thanked the police officers who ensure that lawbreakers are brought to book. He also reminded community members to adhere to level four lockdown regulations.
“We also condemn the act of gender-based violence in our communities and request the community to report such behaviour to the police immediately. The community can report any criminal activities to the police on Crime Stop number 08600 10111, use the My SAPS app or SMS number 32211 and remain anonymous,” Ndou concluded.
