Suspected drowning victim went missing after swimming with five other boys

Roaming the embankments with friends, a trip to the water’s edge has ended in tragedy

The body of a teenage boy has been recovered from Fleurhof Dam on September 14 after what is believed to be a drowning incident. The 15-year-old went to the dam on the afternoon of September 13 to swim with five other boys but did not return home. A search and rescue operation began that evening but had to be postponed as night had fallen, leaving divers unable to search the dark waters.

Search and rescue teams returned to the large body of water alongside Odendaal Road the following morning with divers and a rubber dingy. Shortly before 10:00 on Tuesday morning, the body of the young man was pulled from the water, to the emotional anguish of onlooking family members. The circumstances of the incident have not been revealed, but an inquest docket has been opened with Florida Police and is under investigation.
