A private security company is urging residents to be vigilant after a series of dog poisonings in Florida.
Their reports suggest six dogs were poisoned on one night along Goldman Street, and Fidelity ADT Branch Manager, Fanie Loots, believes this often is a precursor to more serious crimes.
“Usually we see a spate of house robberies following incidents of dog poisonings so we all need to work together to ensure these properties are secure,” he said.
Florida Police station commander, Colonel Amos Tsotetsi, was unable to confirm any cases but this could be attributed to victims not reporting the incidents. “All poison cases must be reported to the local police with a request for them to investigate the case, and remove any suspected poison residue or bait from your property. A poisoning incident is a crime and should therefore always be reported,” urged Fanie.
Residents are urged to be extra vigilant and report any suspicious individuals or vehicles in their area. Guard dogs are a great early warning system and are thus targeted when criminals want to gain access to a property. Telltale suspicious objects in your yard are strange dog treats, meat or sausages or any other edible items which could entice your pet to have a taste.
If an owner suspects their pet may have been poisoned, every second counts. One should get their pet to a vet immediately but a laxative could be administered or they could try to get their pet to bring up their stomach contents to buy time. Activated charcoal is available from a vet or chemist and assists with slowing down the absorption of harmful chemicals.
Simple tasks such as testing your alarm to ensure it is in working order and cutting back any trees or bushes that could be used by criminals to climb your gate, wall or fence are basic forms of vigilance. Checking perimeter security, keeping employees informed of crime in the area, and always observing suspicious individuals are important steps in keeping your pets and loved ones safe.
