Scammers impersonate police members

The Honeydew CPF has issued a warning to residents about two scams that are doing the rounds.

Spokesperson for the CPF, Michael Steyn said in the first scam, a person (the scammer) would call a unsuspecting victim, telling him that a case of rape had been opened against him and that he needed to go to the police station immediately. The scammer then promises to make the case disappear – for a small fee. “They always claim to be a brigadier or station commander, and will send you a picture of a docket to make it more realistic.”

The second scam pertains to stolen vehicles, which Steyn said was not limited to our area. “When your car is stolen and you open a case, again an officer (scammer) would call claiming your car had been recovered and that you needed to pay a transport fee to get it back. They are also very convincing as they would have your case number. How they obtain it, we are unsure of.”

It is important to note that the police will never request payment for a case to be resolved. Should this happen to you, you need to inform your nearest police station about the incident.
