Black eagle juvenile named Amari

The submitted names were made known to BEPR’s eight-person committee, and each member was requested to choose their top three names.

Tuesday, October 12 saw Black Eagles Project Roodekrans (BEPR) get together at Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden (WSNBG) to do the official announcement of the name of the juvenile.

Although BEPR Chairman, Gerald Draper could not attend the meeting due to unforeseen circumstances, the juvenile had to get a name.

“First of all I need to offer my apologies for not being able to be here personally for this highly anticipated annual occasion. I unfortunately had urgent family commitments that require attention. As many of you know, we have had an arrangement with the Roodepoort Northsider/ Record over the past years, where they invite the general public to suggest a name for the juvenile eagle around about the time it usually fledges, and leaves the nest for the first time. This year has been no different to others, and BEPR received 67 names to ponder and choose from,” said Gerald.

The submitted names were made known to BEPR’s eight-person committee, and each member was requested to choose their top three names whereby their first choice would receive three points, second choice two points and third choice one point.

Committee members did not discuss their choices with anyone, and sent their mails to a central point by a certain date and time.

After the votes were tallied, the top few names were re-sent to everybody to repeat the exercise, and usually by this stage a clear winner emerged.

This year the top four names submitted for the final vote were:

• Fulofelo meaning ‘hope’

• Zuri meaning ‘beautiful’

• Amari meaning ‘possesses great strength’

• Dakari meaning ‘joy/ happiness’

One committee member could not vote as he was not in the country at the time the exercise was run, so the remaining seven members’ votes were cast, with the result as follow:

• Fulofelo scored four points

• Dakari scored eight points

• Zuri scored 13 points

• Amari scored 17 points

It was then concluded that the 2021 juvenile will be known as Amari, and BEPR wished her to go from strength to strength soaring through the skies for the rest of her life.

BEPR also congratulated the winner of the competition, Renata Alexander who submitted the fitting name for the juvenile.
