Food and vaccinations for animals in informal settlements
The Animal Outreach programme helps pet owners in Video and Absa stay up to date with their animals’ vaccinations.
Pet owners in the Video and Absa informal settlements were offered free vaccinations and food assistance on October 5. This was part of the Animal Outreach programme by Muldersdrift Cares where they help pet owners stay up to date with their animals’ vaccinations.
Shenan Cochrane, founder of Muldersdrift Cares said they provided pet food monthly. “We provided assistance with dewormings, vaccinations and parasite control. The start of the rains comes with parvo/ distemper which spreads as easily as Covid. Prevention is better than cure.” Parvo/ distemper are the two common systemic viral diseases that affect dogs. They are extremely contagious and can be life-threatening.
Ticks and parasites are also very active in the warmer weather. “It is important to dip or treat your dogs regularly to avoid a costly vet bill due to biliary disease,” Cochrane warned.
The organisation, which was started a year ago, works in several informal settlements where they provide food and vaccinations for as many animals as they can. They rely on the support of the community and donations.
