Creswell Park community takes action

The vacant plot has been a source of concern for the members of the Creswell Park Community.

On Saturday, November 6 residents of the Creswell Park community gathered with their rakes, gloves and refuse bags with the shared vision of a clean neighbourhood.

According to Creswell Park Community Leader, Theo ka Nyanda who initiated the clean-up, litter began piling up in the area, especially on the vacant plot on the corner of Albertina Sisulu Road and Lyon Street.

“The vacant plot has been a source of concern for the members of the Creswell Park community as many people use it as an illegal dumping site. The community has fenced off the area on more than one occasion but the fence keeps getting stolen. Criminals also use the vacant plot as an escape route,” he explained.

About 16 community members turned up, started on the corner of Albertina Sisulu Road and Lyon Street and worked their way up Lyon Street. They also cleared debris that had fallen from trees.

The community used to have clean-up days once a month until four years ago, and Theo hopes to revive the project.

“We are grateful for every community member who showed up. We could have cleaned a bigger area if more people had turned up. We hope to see even more community members lend a helping hand next month,” said community member, Gugu Nkuna.

“The vacant plot has been a great challenge for the community. We urge the owners of the plot to help by fencing it off and keeping it clean.”

Theo and Gugu would like to thank everyone who assisted on the day as well as those who contributed refuse bags, including Pikitup. They would also like to thank Joseph and Nasu for providing the helpers with gloves.

They are looking forward to next month’s clean-up and hope to see many more community members contributing to a cleaner neighbourhood.
