Operation O Kae Molao yields 800+ arrests across Gauteng

Eleven people were arrested for possession of illegal mining equipment in Matholesville.

The police in Gauteng, together with other law-enforcement agencies, were at it again this past weekend, firmly asserting the authority of the State in the Province.

The members under the leadership of Gauteng Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Elias Mawela were out in numbers for another Operation O Kae Molao, which seeks to address any form of criminal activities.

The operation also aimed to assist the local police stations to reduce crime, and this past weekend the focus was on illegal mining, which is a root cause of crimes such as assault, murder, attempted murder and possession of illegal firearms.

The operation saw over 800 people arrested across Gauteng for various crimes that range from possession of unlicensed firearms, and possession and dealing in drugs. Among those arrested were wanted suspects for GBVF-related crimes, as well as 70 people for contravening the Immigration Act.

The Roodepoort operations resulted in the disruption of illegal mining, and 11 people were arrested for possession of illegal mining equipment in Matholesville.

Roadblocks were set up on various roads throughout the province, and scores of vehicles and people were searched. Four unroadworthy vehicles were impounded and two stolen vehicles were recovered. R39 000 worth of fines were issued for contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

The impact brought by this highly intensified visibility and crime intelligence-driven operation was greatly appreciated by the Provincial Police Commissioner. He applauded the zeal, enthusiasm and commitment shown by different law-enforcement agencies and stakeholders throughout the entire operation.
