‘Where are the recycling igloos?’

For many years local resident, Richard Hunt had been depositing his glass and paper into recycling igloos.

In recent years much focus has been on recycling efforts as a way of reducing the damaging impact of waste on the environment.

Slowly but surely communities have come on board to support the critical cause by separating their waste and depositing the recyclable materials into bins provided by recycling organisations or alternatively, dropping it off at recycling companies or points.

For many years Roodekrans resident, Richard Hunt had been depositing his glass and paper into recycling igloos near the corner of Belladonna and Buckwheat Roads.

This was until the drop-off point was removed almost a year ago.

“I – the community in fact – have such a big love for nature and we have a huge requirement for recycling in general. I feel it’s only fair we’re provided the resources to do so. I want to plead with recycling companies to help us so we can do the right thing and help the environment,” he said.

According to Richard the nearest drop-off point is on Ouklip Road in Wilro Park. However, those bins are full within a matter of days; hence his request for more such sites in the area.

During his quest to have more bins provided throughout the neighbourhood, Mpact Recycling has heard his plea and will soon start the process of having a bin placed somewhere near the previous site. But, they need your help.

“The request has to come from the communities. Mpact Recycling is appealing to communities to raise their hands if they want to become a community drop-off site. We simply need a secure location, and details to sign up the community site (such as a church, retirement village or community centre) onto the programme,” Mpact Recycling Post-Consumer Team Leader, Yasmeen Adam explained.

“As residents, you can also help your community drop-off site raise funds by dropping off your recyclables at many of the sites located countrywide. Mpact Recycling pays the community sites for the tonnage collected and we collect for free.”

Mpact is a leading paper and plastics packaging and recycling business in South Africa. They are focused on closing the loop in plastic and paper packaging through recycling and beneficiation of recyclables. As one of the leaders in the packaging and recycling industries, they have a responsibility to the environment, communities, the economy and the planet. It is their mission to develop practical, economically viable and environmentally sustainable solutions that bring them, and the world, closer to a true circular economy.
