For 13 years, World Read Aloud Day has drawn attention to the importance of sharing stories by challenging participants to grab a book, find an audience, and read aloud.
Tuesday, February 1 saw Weltevreden Park school Welridge Academy celebrate World Read Aloud Day by dressing up as their favourite book characters, while learners brought their favourite book to school.

Welridge Academy told the Northsider that the objective was to promote and encourage a culture of reading aloud with children among families, parents, caregivers, educators and society in general, thus creating a love for books and reading.
The global effort, created by the non-profit LitWorld and sponsored by Scholastic, is celebrated annually in over 173 countries.

The day is all about bringing people together through the shared connection of reading aloud within the communities.
According to the school, they value the significant role books play in the education of their learners; and to celebrate books and help grow a love for them, learners were invited to dress up as their favourite storybook character.
