Discovery Community Forum cleans up vacant Caltex garage on Anstruther Avenue

The ebbs and flows of business fortunes can have lasting impacts on communities.

Discovery Community Forum (DCF) members regularly clean the area around the shops along Anstruther Street and next on their to-do-list was the vacant Caltex garage at the corner of Melville Street. Assisted by Leandra van Wyk and her Leandra Estates team, as well as Pieter du Plessis from RE/MAX Masters, DCF members trimmed the unsightly grass and bushes around the fencing of the abandoned filling station.

The abandoned Caltex is one of two in the nearby suburbs, the other situated on Jan Smuts Avenue, across from the Florida Park Tennis Club. The sites are still owned by Caltex, which is owned by fuel distributor Astron Energy, which in turn is a subsidiary of natural resources multi-national corporation, Glencore. Astron Energy representatives confirmed that they were in the process of re-opening the Discovery site pending a retail licence being issued, while discussions were ongoing as to the future of the Florida Park site.
