City of Johannesburg closes some licensing centres due to continued protests
The City of Johannesburg will advise residents and the media further as to when these service centres will resume operations.
Several licensing centres across the city have been forced to close their doors and cease operations, March 2.
This comes as a result of protest action by various groups and members of the community. The changes made by the Gauteng Provincial Government to the driver’s licence and testing booking system which blocks third parties from booking services on behalf of individuals or groups have left many groups and individuals dissatisfied.

The City of Johannesburg Licensing Department and Testing Stations have been affected by this protest. This is despite the fact that the Gauteng Provincial Government had issued the directive to change the booking system. The province-wide protest action is an attempt by the affected groups of runners and individuals who benefited from the previous practice to get the Gauteng Provincial Government to heed to their demands.
The City’s licensing department unfortunately also has fallen victim to the unrest, and centres have therefore been forced to stop operations. The closure of City of Johannesburg offices and operations have been taken in the interest of preserving the lives of employees and members of the public, and to protect property.
The following licensing centres will be closed until further notice:
– Region A: Midrand Licensing Department
– Region B: Strijdom Park Testing Station
– Region C: Roodepoort City Hall, Florida Licensing Department
– Region D: No closures currently
– Region E: Region E Licensing Department (JMPD organising support from POPs to assist with crowd control)
– Region F: Langlaagte Licensing Department, Ormonde Licensing and Eureka House are all closed
It should be noted that because of the closure of the Roodepoort City Hall, the revenue services offered at this facility have also been forced to close. However, residents can access their billing services at the Roodepoort Civic Centre located at 100 Christiaan de Wet Road, Florida Park, Roodepoort. The City of Johannesburg will advise residents and the media further as to when these service centres will resume operations.
