Discovery Primary School high jumper on her way to Gauteng championships

Caitlyn Banks attempted the high jump event for the first time ever this year

Having progressed through the Cluster then District competitions, Caitlyn Banks is on her way to the provincial championships.

The 11-year-old Discovery Primary School Grade 5 learner has recently uncovered a hidden high jump talent that has seen her win admirers from among the school’s coaching staff. Throwing herself over the crossbar for the first time ever this year, the novice has quickly risen to now being able to jump roughly her own height at 1,30 metres.

The school had no inter-house competitions this athletics season, opting instead to have a school-wide talent search. The trials gave each learner the opportunity to battle their classmates in school colours, leading to the unearthing of Caitlyn’s raw talent. “Caitlyn has exceeded all our expectations. She is such a natural. The curve of her run, the take-off, the mechanics are just superb; it is amazing to watch,” said one of her coaches, Paul Bodnarchuk.

Not feeling any pressure, Caitlyn said, “The first time I was a little nervous. I like high jump because I get to use all my energy. When I look at the crossbar, I just imagine myself going over.” Wishing Caitlyn luck, Principal Raymond Peters said, “It is a great accomplishment. We are very proud of her and she has all our support.” The next step is the Gauteng Championships which will be held at the University of Johannesburg Stadium on March 4 and 5.
