Police in the Honeydew precinct have noticed an increase in hijackings and are urging motorists to be vigilant. Honeydew Police communications officer, Warrant Officer Dave Stanton said victims were usually approached by another vehicle pulling alongside them while they were driving.
“The occupants draw the victim’s attention, sometimes by hooting and informing them that there is something wrong with their car. This can be anything – a flat tyre, broken lights or some type of damage. Once the victims stop to inspect the non-existent problem, they are robbed or hijacked.”
Stanton said the incidents have been happening throughout the Honeydew precinct but are more prevalent along Malibongwe Drive and the N1 Western bypass. They have been recorded at different times but are slightly more prevalent at night.
“We strongly advise that if you experience such activities do not stop but rather drive into a nearby garage or even to your local police station before checking your vehicle,” Warrant Office Stanton warned. “If this happens to you, observe if you are being followed and try to capture the vehicle’s details, including the registration number.”
You can call for assistance on 10 111 or the 112 Emergency Centre if you do not have airtime.
