Roodepoort Athletics Club finish strong at Irene Running Festival

Runners competing for the first time and seasoned veterans brave the wet and windy weather

The red and white bibbed athletes of the Roodepoort Athletics Club (RAC) returned home with medals galore.

Competing at the Irene Running Festival on April 9, runners young and old flew the Roodepoort flag high at the 21km and 48km race event.

In the 21km sections, Fantine de Wet placed first in her category for those between 50 and 60 years old with a time of one hour 47 minutes. It was a family affair as the first man across the line was Fantine’s son-in-law, Stephan Visser. In his first-ever 21km, Stephan clocked in at just under one hour 51 minutes. Shawn Greyling also impressed in his first 21km, finishing in two hours 34 minutes.

In the 48km section, the first RAC member to finish was Nicholas Gouws, who did so in an admirable four hours and 17 minutes. A special mention goes to the oldest tarmac addict at both the festival and RAC, 82-year-old Cassie Carsten, who stopped his watch at the three hour four minute mark.
