Authorities have urged parents and caregivers to monitor children near open water following a drowning incident at a dam in Muldersdrift.
A 12-year-old boy drowned in a dam in Muldersdrift on Sunday, October 18.
Johannesburg Water Policing and Diving Services members were dispatched to the scene at about 14:00 after receiving information about the incident, according to spokesperson Warrant Officer Raymond Sambo.

Police recovered the body at the scene before handing it over to Muldersdrift police, who will open an inquest docket and investigate the circumstances surrounding the death.

The incident highlights the dangers children face around dams and other open-water areas, particularly when swimming without adequate safety measures.
Sambo urged members of the public to take precautions when engaging in water-related activities at dams, rivers, and other bodies of water. Authorities advise anyone entering open water to wear a life jacket and call on parents and caregivers to educate children about the hazards of swimming in unmonitored areas.
Sambo also emphasised the importance of constant adult supervision of young children near open water to help prevent further tragedies.
Anyone who witnessed the Muldersdrift incident or has information that could assist the investigation is urged to contact the relevant police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
