More than 28 people were arrested during Okae Molao operations in Roodepoort on April 30. Members of law enforcement set up roadblocks in different areas to conduct stops-and-searches as well as enforce law and order.

Randburg Police spokesperson, Captain Makgowanyana Maja said 21 of the arrested suspects were migrants.

“The focus was more on clamping down on illegal mining, and several pieces of equipment were confiscated. These included phendukas, stampers, pots, wheelbarrows, steel bars and gas cylinders.”

Captain Maja added that liquor, drugs, and gold nuggets were also among the confiscated items. Suspects were arrested for a number of felonies including assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. They appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ court on May 3.
