Blankets and beanies for beneficiaries

Every month a different project is launched with the aim of providing assistance to organisations in need.

Many hands make light work. Time and time again supporters of Light a Sparke NPO have demonstrated the power in the expression.

Every month a different project is launched with the aim of providing assistance to local organisations and/ or charities in need. According to NPO founder, Janene Machin their most recent Square-o-thon project was successfully completed by the end of April.

“Thanks to our communities and volunteers, we’ve received more than double our quota. With this project we asked our supporters to knit squares for blankets. Our goal was 5 000 squares, and by the end of the month we finished with at least 12 000,” she said.

She is also excited to announce that 1 500 of these squares were donated by supporters on the West Rand. These squares will now be taken to a central point in both Johannesburg and Cape Town, and subsequently be distributed among old age homes to have the squares attached to form whole blankets.

These blankets will in turn be donated to various organisations and charities in need.

“This month we’ve launched the May Madness Beanie Challenge. We have undertaken the challenge to donate   10 000 beanies from sizes ranging from five-year-olds to 100-year-olds. Even though we are thankful for any donation, we would like to encourage supporters to rather knit for our older beneficiaries as they currently need it most,” Janene said.

According to Janene the Light a Sparke supporters are thrilled to take on different projects and help whenever the need arises. It’s no surprise the organisation already managed to send two truck loads of donations such as food, clothes and blankets to assist the KZN flood victims.

“It just goes to show that with many giving hands and hearts, it’s easier to help those who need it most. We truly thank each and every donor and volunteer. Without them we would never have been able to change so many lives,” she said.
