Four schools in the Roodepoort area took part in a local schools tournament from April 12 to 28 at the Roodepoort Sports Grounds.

Teams from the four schools displayed their soccer, netball, volleyball and chess skills in the inaugural tournament hosted by Innocent Mhlanga, an Educator and Sports Master at Tulip Combined School.
The schools that participated were Royal College, Tulip Combined School, South Hills Combined and Queens Park High.

According to the organisers, the schools decided on the tournament after realising that some schools were not accommodated in the schools league.
“Post Covid-19 we had challenges to stage sporting events but now we wish learners to play again,” said Innocent.
Royal College proved to be second to none on the soccer field as they bagged most of the awards, while the other schools showed signs of development in netball, volleyball and chess.
Innocent said as the organisers they were hopeful that as they continue with the initiative more schools would come to the party and participate.

“We are hoping to get sponsorship as we have already communicated with the Department of Education through the coordinator of sport in Roodepoort who has promised to assist accordingly.
“Overall we can say the tournament was a success, although unfortunately we had to ask schools to contribute financially as we do not have a sponsor yet. They did cooperate and purchased 15 trophies and 340 gold and silver medals, as we could only award the winners and the runners-up,” said Innocent.
