JMPD confirms one person dead in Witpoortjie accident

A 22-year-old man sustained fatal injuries while another 22-year-old man sustained serious injuries. He was taken to Lenmed Randfontein Hospital by ER24.

A fatal accident occurred at about 22:50 on Wednesday, May 18 at McGrath Avenue and Hulley Road in Witpoortjie. Four vehicles, a silver Renault Megane, a silver Audi A4, a black Mercedes-Benz and a white BMW X5 were involved.

It’s alleged that the Renault with three male occupants was travelling north along McGrath Avenue when the driver lost control and collided into a street lamp pole and a palisade fence.

The palisade fence caused damage to the Audi, the Mercedes-Benz and the BMW which were parked in parking bays inside a private premises.

On arrival at the scene the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officer couldn’t determine who the driver of the Renault was due to the extent of the accident.

A 19-year-old man sustained serious to critical injuries and he was airlifted to Lenmed Tembisa Hospital by HALO EMS helicopter.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that a case docket for culpable homicide, and reckless and/ or negligent driving had been opened at the Roodepoort Police Station for further investigation.
