The King’s School West Rand hosts the finals of the West Rand Primary Schools Football knockout tournament

Charterhouse Prep, Constantia Kloof Primary and Witpoortjie schools the big winners

The grassroots soccer sprouts are flourishing.

The finals of the West Rand Primary Schools Football Association (WRPSFA) knockout tournament were held at The King’s School West Rand on May 24. After running the elimination gauntlet, the best two soccer-playing schools between the U/9 and U/13 age groups were to contest for the titles.

Charterhouse Preparatory were the day’s first medal recipients when their U/9s defeated Constantia Kloof Primary 4–0. Although second-best in the youngest of the age groups, Constantia Kloof would not have to wait long for success as their U/10s defeated Roodebeeck Primary 1–0 for their gold medal.

The U/11 final was a high-drama affair between two schools who were well-represented on the day. Roodebeeck had opened up a 3–1 lead by half time but Culembeeck Primary clawed their way back to 3–3 to take the game to extra time. Roodebeeck were stunned when a drilled corner kick struck the back of a Roodebeeck defender and cannoned into his own goal to give Culembeeck the lead. Killing off the game, a long-range effort from Culembeeck looped over the Roodebeeck goalkeeper to seal the 5–3 comeback win.

Culembeeck’s U/12s then picked up a second winners medal for their school before Roodebeeck made sure they did not return to Witpoortjie empty-handed as they beat Horizon View Primary 2–0.

A proud WRPSFA chairperson, Deon Moyce, praised the performances, saying “Congratulations to the winners; we saw some quality football from our finalists. West Rand primary schools football continues to produce budding stars for the future.”
