Traffic Alert: Be careful when driving in Matholesville

If a motorist refuses or doesn't give them the money they want, motorists are attacked and vehicles are damaged.

Following the recent implementation of load shedding, it has come to the attention of Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department’s (JMPD) that whenever the lights are switched off and it gets dark, youth from Matholesville block off the road with burning tyres and rocks.

JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said the youth also extort money from motorists to give or allow them passage to pass.

If a motorist refuses they are attacked and vehicles are damaged.

Fihla confirmed that officers have been deployed in the area and motorists are advised that when Randfontein Road is closed off by the protesters, and there are no police officers present, rather avoid and use alternative routes.

Motorists are also urged that if they have come across this situation to immediately report it at Roodepoort Police Station.
