Public warned about dog theft
''Turn your back and your dog or cat is missing. People must try to keep their dogs in the backyard.''
Dog theft is once again on the rise on the West Rand and in surrounding areas. Brazen thieves are employing new tactics, including violence, to grab the four-legged family members.
SPCA Roodepoort Krugersdorp recently shared a report from another group on their Facebook page about a dog that was stolen from the owner’s yard.
Despite the yard being very secure with high walls and a sturdy gate, the gate allegedly was slightly bent at one of the bars and a stick was used to hook the dog on the collar and pull it out.
An intruder was spotted jumping over the gate possibly to steal the second dog, and a suspect was caught an hour and 25 minutes later. The dog was found cruelly tied in a box, helpless after the suspect had pointed it out at a taxi rank, but he managed to escape before the police arrived. Big bags were found at the scene that indicated that the stolen dogs were put in a bag and carried away without anybody realising.

The suspect was caught halfway back from the taxi rank to the same house.
SPCA Roodepoort/ Krugersdorp Manager, Mandy Cattanach said that was happening everywhere.
“Turn your back and your dog or cat is missing. People must try to keep their dogs in the backyard. A dog in a front garden can be stolen or poisoned within minutes, so keep your furry friends inside at night as well. We are living in crazy times where our pets are targeted for money, fighting, and food among many other things,” she warned.
