Out of control fire threatens residents
"We are urging residents to make sure that all the necessary safety precautions are followed when starting a controlled fire."
A wind-whipped fire in quick-burning dormant vegetation can cause flames to become uncontrollable easily even though safety precautions are followed when starting a controlled fire.
On Saturday, August 20 City of Johannesburg Emergency Management Services (EMS), ANCO Manufacturing, Roodekrans Neighbourhood Watch (RNW) and Emergency Control SA (ECSA) responded to a fire in Quail and Canary Streets, Horison.

After receiving an urgent call for assistance, City of Johannesburg EMS went to the aid of community members bordering the Kloofendal Nature Reserve after a controlled fire had gotten out of control and started affecting properties.
Other emergency services on scene also lend a helping hand until the fire was contained.
City of Johannesburg EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi confirmed that they responded to a grass fire that was reported in the area.
“We are urging residents to make sure that all the necessary safety precautions are followed when starting a controlled fire.
“This is to ensure that, in case the fire gets out of control it does not affect other properties since we are in a windy season now. Fires can easily change direction and spread faster than expected,” said Mulaudzi.
