In addition to the Cycle2Ride event, the Grade 9s and 11s held their fundraising market day. The Grade 9s sold homemade jewellery and the Grade 11s have already begun planning for their 2023 matric dance. Cycle2Ride is an initiative supported by the Curro group that aims to promote an active lifestyle through coaching, training and cycling-based support.

With some still on their training wheels, the three to six-year-olds began the races in the Out-of-the-Blocks section. After a quick awards round, the older kids hoped on their mountain bikes to take on the off-road course that snakes around the Curro-owned property adjacent to the school. Starting in the parking lot, cyclists raced through the junior block, around the dirt track then back up the sidewalk of Vintage Street to the finish in the parking lot.

Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel is in its sixth year and Principal Belinda Gibson is proud of the school’s exponential growth that sees them with over 2 000 learners in the pre-primary, primary and high school sections.

“We are trying to set ourselves apart by having our excellent academics in place and getting our sport out there. Having initiatives like this, people can see we want to work with our community,” she said.

The market day is another valuable facet that has real-world applications. “That element of empowering people gets me excited because I think entrepreneurship is so pivotal to our country. You need those skills to make your business successful,” added Gibson.

Aiming to make it bigger next year, keeping pace with the leaders of the pack will take a special effort.
