Finding alternative ways to keep yourself busy during school holidays

As schools close for the holidays, here are a few tips learners can use to stay productive.

As the schools close for the winter holidays, the question of ‘what do we do to keep us busy?’ is probably on everyone’s minds. While some learners enjoy lazing away in front of the TV or catching up on their favourite movies and series, others may be pressurised in terms of what they can do to stay productive.

Ellery Booth, the founder and centre manager at Synergistic Covenant Network from Davidsonville Recreational Centre, said that they have a multitude of programmes available for learners at the centre. The centre also provides youth development skills where learners can become part of the diverse programmes they have to offer.

Learners should engage in activities such as soccer.

Ellery explained the importance of keeping the mind occupied with productive activities and also said that learners tend to think that a holiday means a break. While this is true to some extent, it is not an excuse for learners to fill their minds by doing absolutely nothing.

“I would always encourage learners to adopt a culture whereby they should challenge themselves more by engaging in activities such as soccer, tennis and reading as it helps to foster and cultivate growth and development,” she said.

She said that learners rarely make use of the library during these times and describes the library to be dormant, showing that learners are rarely interested in reading.

Learners should invest more in reading content that is not the school syllabus.

“There are street games which learners can engage in like 7-a-side, to make use of the tennis courts and to ask for help,” she said.

Libraries are dormant and therefore learners should make more use of libraries during the holidays.

In the technological age, more so, learners are rarely interested in reading and choose to occupy their minds with irrelevant stuff.

Ellery also mentioned that learners should adopt a healthy competitive culture whereby they engage in activities which encourage competition so that they become more understanding and interactive.

Learners should engage in healthy competition through sports activities.
